Here’s a fun recipe for all you lego lovers out there!
We have sooooooo many legos in our house. And TBH (TBH is an acronym for “to be honest”) (and TBH – my daughter just informed me of that acronym because I’m so not cool), I have a like-hate relationship with legos.
I like it when they occupy my kids’ time. Hayden can spend hours doing legos, and he’s done some pretty cool ones. He likes to keep them together, and we have dragons and rocket ships hanging up in his room.
But. We also have a ton of legos that have no home. I hate stepping on them. I hate finding them in every imaginable place. We store them in a big rubbermaid container, but inevitably my kids will get them out and dump them everywhere. GRRRR.
Eating sweets that look like legos, though, I can get behind that. The new Lego movie just came out. So people are talking about legos. Somebody asked us if we could make a lego dessert for an upcoming event so I decided to try lego brownies.
They are surprisingly simple and turned out pretty good. For the brownies, I just use a boxed mix. I have made homemade brownies before, and I’m not against them. They can be pretty good. But, I think brownie mix is just as good. And it’s super easy. So to simplify things, I made box brownies. I’m partial to Duncan Hines chewy fudge–and I make the chewy kind, not the cake-like ones. Because why do you want a cake-like brownie? If you wanted that, you’d make cake, right?!
I then made a super simple buttercream icing. I use this buttercream frosting on anything that calls for buttercream frosting. I particularly like it on chocolate cake, and it obviously goes good on brownies as well.
Just add food coloring to get different colors. I made five colors, but realized in the end, that I don’t think orange is a typical lego color. I decided to use orange because I had orange M&M’s in my bag. So we have orange. Along with red, yellow, green, and blue. Brown missed the mark, so no brown lego brownies. Who really wants that anyway?!
If you’re into legos, or even if you’re not, try this fun Lego dessert! It’s kid-approved!

|
- 1 box brownie mix plus required ingredients (I used Duncan Hines chewy fudge brownies)
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1/2 cup Crisco shortening
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2-3 tbsp. milk as needed
- food coloring red, blue, green, and yellow
Ingredients
Buttercream Icing

- Prepare brownies as directed on the box.
- Let cool completely. Before icing, place in freezer for approximately 10 minutes.
- Cream together softened butter and shortening.
- Add vanilla and powdered sugar, mixing well.
- Add milk to reach desired creamy consistency.
- Divide icing equally into four separate bowls. Add desired food coloring to each bowl.
- Frost one quarter of the brownies with red icing. Frost the next quarter section with yellow icing. Frost the next quarter section with green icing. Frost the final quarter section with blue icing.
- Using a knive dipped in hot water, cut your brownies into 24 equal squares. Be careful to keep your colors separate.
- Once your brownies are cut into squares, put M&M's (face down and same color as the icing) on your brownies. Use 6 or 4 M&M's per brownie.
When I made these, I made 72 brownies because I was making them for an event. I have simplified the recipe down to 1 pan. Because of that, you'll need to be extra careful putting your icing on the brownies. (I split my 3 pans of brownies with a different color icing on each half). Also - to make orange icing (if desired), you'd have to split the icing up even more on the brownies. I didn't include orange icing on the 1-pan recipe. If you're going to make orange icing, just combine the red and yellow food coloring.
